Murmuring Against the Lord
 vs Thankfulness

(Col 3:17 KJV)
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed,
do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Eph 5:18-20 KJV
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess;
 but be filled with the Spirit;
(19) Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
 (20) Giving thanks always for all things unto God
and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Eph 5:1-4 KJV
Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
 (2) And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us,
 and hath given himself for us
an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
 (3) But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness,
let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
(4) Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient:
 but rather giving of thanks.

Murmurring against the Lord:

1. Murmur-A complaint half suppressed, or uttered in a low, muttering voice.
2. To grumble; to complain; to utter complaints in a low,half articulated voice; to utter sullen discontent with the thing which is the cause of the discontent or evil.; to be obstinate, to complain.

(Exo 15:24 KJV)
And the people murmured against Moses, saying,
What shall we drink?

(Exo 16:8 KJV)
 And Moses said, This shall be, when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat,
and in the morning bread to the full;
for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him:
and what are we? your murmurings are not against us,
but against the LORD.

(Exo 17:3 KJV)
And the people thirsted there for water;
and the people murmured against Moses, and said,
Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt,
to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

(Num 14:2 KJV)
And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron:
and the whole congregation said unto them,
Would to God that we had died in the land of Egypt!
or would to God we had died in this wilderness!

Num 14:26-37 KJV
 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
(27) How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me?
I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
 (28) Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD,
as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
 (29) Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness;
and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number,
from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
 (30) Doubtless ye shall not come into the land,
concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein,
save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
(31) But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey,
them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
(32) But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
(33) And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years,
 and bear your whoredoms,
until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
(34) After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days,
 each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years,
and ye shall know my breach of promise.
 (35) I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation,
that are gathered together against me:
in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
(36) And the men, which Moses sent to search the land,
who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him,
by bringing up a slander upon the land,
(37) Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land,
died by the plague before the LORD.

Jud 1:14-21 KJV
 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying,
Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
 (15) To execute judgment upon all,
and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds
which they have ungodly committed,
and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
 (16) These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts;
and their mouth speaketh great swelling words,
 having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.

(17) But, beloved, remember ye the words
which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
(18) How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time,
who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
(19) These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.
(20) But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith,
 praying in the Holy Ghost,
 (21) Keep yourselves in the love of God,
looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

THANKFULNESS
THANKFULNESS Gratitude directed towards God, generally in response to God's concrete acts in history. Being grateful for kindness received; and being ready to acknowledge it.

Thanksgiving was central to Old Testament worship. Sacrifice and offerings were to be made not grudgingly but with thanksgiving:

Psa 107:21-22 KJV
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness,
 and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
(22) And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving,
 and declare his works with rejoicing.

Jon 2:9 KJV
 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay that that I have vowed.
Salvation is of the LORD.

Psa 69:30-34 KJV
 I will praise the name of God with a song,
and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
 (31) This also shall please the LORD
 better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
(32) The humble shall see this, and be glad:
and your heart shall live that seek God.
(33) For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.
 (34) Let the heaven and earth praise him,
 the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
 and is to characterize all of Christian life (Col. 2:7; 4:2).

Col 2:6-10 KJV
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
(7) Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
(8) Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit,
 after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
(9) For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
(10) And ye are complete in him,
which is the head of all principality and power:

Col 4:2-6 KJV
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
 (3) Withal praying also for us,
that God would open unto us a door of utterance,
to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
(4) That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.
(5) Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
(6) Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt,
 that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
Early Christians expressed thanks: for Christ's healing ministry (Luke 17:16); for Christ's deliverance of the believer from sin (Rom. 6:17-18; 7:25); for God's indescribable gift of grace in Christ (2 Cor. 9:14-15; 1 Cor. 15:57; compare Rom. 1:21); and for the faith of fellow Christians (Rom. 1:8).

Psa 100:4 (KJV)
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise:
be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

Lev 22:29 (KJV)
And when ye will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the LORD,
offer it at your own will.

1Ch 16:8 (KJV)
Give thanks unto the LORD,
call upon his name,
make known his deeds among the people.

1Ch 16:34 (KJV)
O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good;
for his mercy endureth for ever.

1Ch 16:35 (KJV)
And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation,
and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen,
that we may give thanks to thy holy name,
and glory in thy praise.

Rom 1:21 (KJV)
 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God,
 neither were thankful;
but became vain in their imaginations,
and their foolish heart was darkened.

Col 3:15 (KJV)
 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts,
to the which also ye are called in one body;
 and be ye thankful.

Heb 13:5-6 (KJV)
 Let your conversation{Grk=life-style} be without covetousness;
and be content with such things as ye have:
for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
{6} So that we may boldly say,
The Lord is my helper,
and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Mat 6:31-34 (KJV)
{31} Therefore take no thought, saying,
What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink?
or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
 {32} (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:)
 for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
{33} But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.
 {34} Take therefore no thought for the morrow:
for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
 Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Phil 4:10-13 (KJV)
But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly,
that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again;
wherein ye were also careful{Grk=mindful},
but ye lacked opportunity.
{11} Not that I speak in respect of want:
for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am,
 therewith to be content.
{12} I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound:
every where and in all things
 I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry,
 both to abound and to suffer need.
 {13} I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Psa 100 (KJV)
 A Psalm of praise.
Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
{2} Serve the LORD with gladness:
come before his presence with singing.
 {3} Know ye that the LORD he is God:
it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
 {4} Enter into his gates with thanksgiving,
and into his courts with praise:
be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
 {5} For the LORD is good;
 his mercy is everlasting;
and his truth endureth to all generations.
