Do As I Say, Not As I Do
Have you ever heard the phrase (probably from your parents)
"do as I say, not as I do"? It's what people in authority say
when what they are doing contradicts what they are saying. Jesus
recognized this fault in the religious leaders of His day. Although
the scribes and Pharisees verbally taught the law of Moses correctly,
their lives fell far short of God's expectations. Hear what Jesus
says in Matthew 23:1-4: "Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to
his disciples, saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses
seat: all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, these do and
observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not.
Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them
on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their
finger". Christians are to lead by example both in word and deed. Do
you teach people about God but don't do those things you teach? Then
you may be a Pharisee.
