Note: The following article was sent today by a
missionary in Joao Pessoa, on Brazil's northeast
coast. He gives a good, albeit brief description,
of what happens here this time of year.

BRAZILIAN CHURCHES FLEE CARNAVAL FREE-FOR-ALL
by Joseph C. McKinney, Jr.

February 17, 2007

Today a busload of people from the Joćo Pessoa
church is heading for a church camp in Patos.
Churches in most cities are leaving town, going to
farms, camps, etc., trying to escape Carnaval.

In the festivities that begin today, Saturday, and
end on Wednesday, people will drink till they pass
out, jump up and down to blaring, immoral music,
and experiment some form of narcotic. Young people
will initiate frivolous sexual activity; unmarried
girls will get pregnant this weekend.

In addition to the physical dangers of stray
bullets, car accidents, and violence among the
raucous, the spiritual damage can be even more
serious. Carnaval invites one to a party where
anything goes and it promises no consequences.
Normal people get caught up in it and unleash the
devil in their lives, and it is hard to escape
because it is everywhere: on the radio, on
television, in the street, at your neighbor's
house, everywhere.

Please pray, therefore, for the people of Brazil,
that this spiritual low point of the year will
somehow show them how much they need Jesus.

Pray for safety for the travelers on the roads.
Pray that the churches will be blessed with a
spiritual shot in the arm at the camps, that
while the enemy is reaping souls, somebody will
find salvation.
