Randal Matheny SÃO PAULO (BZNS)- Last night at 6:40 p.m. local time an Airbus A-320 jet owned by the TAM airline company crashed on landing at the Congonhas airport, located on the city's south side. So far, 186 have been confirmed dead, but the number could reach as high as 200, according to a web report this morning by the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo. http://tinyurl.com/2p29aa For details of the crash in English, see the Fox News site: http://tinyurl.com/yvtnoe Fires were still burning this morning at 9 a.m. local time, streets around the airport were closed to traffic, and houses and business in the immediate area of the crash -- across a major artery from the airport -- had been evacuated. Soon after we heard about the accident, we called Otavio Carvalho's house, since his wife Valeria travels frequently. She was safe at home but had made the same flight, TAM 3054, on Thursday. Otavio and Valeria live in Sao Paulo, but continue to work with the SJC church. They live near the Congonhas airport. We have checked the list of names of the confirmed dead and did not recognize any we knew. In Brazil, however, it's common not to use last names, except in official documents, so it's not often easy to identify a person by the full name. Nor have we any reports from brethren in São Paulo or Porto Alegre, from where the flight originated. Please pray for the families of these victims. Our travels within Brazil are usually done from the Guarulhos International Airport, since it's closer to Sao Jose dos Campos. ----- Read this article online with more links: http://randalmatheny.com/doku.php?id=brazil:congonhasaircrash BZeal rejoices in the progress of the gospel in Brazil and around the world.
