Well, first of all, I'm not totally surprised the guitar lessons didn't 
stick.  That's because I had the same habit of drumming on things...peanut 
butter jars, coffee cans...and I'm a drummer now. :)

Try www.samash.com for both an inexpensive kit, and to find out if there's 
a store near you for taking him to get lessons.
