My parents wanted to get me a kit after I asked for one years ago, so what they did was start me off slow ... they got me a tamborine (with a head on it) and a pair of Ludwig brushes. I played that tamborine and brushes for about a year then I got a snare drum. I played the snare and tamborine in my church for another year or so and then a bass player showed up at the church and say me playing the snare drum and said he had a drumset at his house and wanted to know if I could play them, I told him I didn't know. So he brough his kit in the church over the weekend (it was a HUGE Gretch kit from the earlier 70's ... it was an 8 piece kit toms starting at 6", 8", 10", 12", 13" 14" 15" & 16" and a single bass and a snare) with Zildjian cymbals). Well I played that kit for a couple years at the church ... then my parents finally bought me a kit (which I picked out). They took me to a store and I picked a Pearl Export kit (this was in 1987). So the best thing to do is maybe start small, buy a snare drum, etc. and see if it hold his interest ... OR see about maybe renting a kit, etc. before going out and buying a full setup (even a cheap set will still cost close to $800 or so with stands / cymbals / sticks / throne, etc.) Danny http://www.dannypattersonmusic.com --------------------------------------------------- <<Date: 28 Nov 2003 13:37:26 -0000 To: christiandrummer@... He has for some time walked around the house banging on everything with his hands. I'm thinking of getting him some drum lessons. I don't want to invest too much before I find out whether or not he is going to keep at it. Any suggestions for buying him an inexpensive kit? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
