Hi Jessica,
Welcome to the group!
My husband (who is not home right now--long story!) is the drummer of the 
family.  Most drummers tend to play by rhythm--often by ear--and don't 
really read "notes".  At least the ones I have met.
What type of kit did they get you?  (brands on drums & cymbals).   My 
husband's home kit is a Groove Percussion kit that has Sabian cymbals, and 
the one he used at church was also Groove Percussion, but has Zildjian 
cymbals.
