Dear Paul,
   When the Saducees (the theological liberals of  Jesus' day who denied
the miraculous) attempted to trick Jesus into a philosophical and
theological dilemna regarding the resurrection (Matt.22:23-33),
Jesus said they were in error on two points:  1)they didn't know the
scripture; and 2)they didn't know the power of God.
   From the garden of Eden, Satan has misquoted and misapplied the
Word of God, and seduced men into doing it as a part of his determined
strategy to question both God's authority and His righteousness, and
divert mankind from the Kingdom of Heaven with seditious reasonings.
   I don't know whether your misapplication of scripture is intentional
or an honest mistake; whether you are honestly struggling with some
of the most difficult events of Biblical history or whether the same
voice that whispered in Eve's ear has captured your attention, but the
passage you cited in Numbers has nothing whatsover to do with Joshua
and Jericho, but rather with Moses and the Midianites, though the
results are similar.
   For the Jericho account you need to look in Joshua 6.
