Hello Listers and especially you, Adam, if you're still here,
Adam, I hope you will reconsider and stay here on the list. I must admit
that I also get frustrated sometimes reading some of the posts here. What
bothers me occasionally, is not so much the subject, but the*way* we say
things to each other. But I have a feeling that if we talked to each other
in the right way more often, the subjects would also tend more often to fit
better into the theme of unity.
It is hard in written words to convey attitude and intent. Sometimes if we
go directly to the point, it sounds dry, or mean spirited. I think that's
why some of the letters in the new testament seem to overflow with love, and
with praise of Jesus, especially in the introductions.
Here's an example in the intro to 1st Corinthians ............ to them that
are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every
place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus
Christ. I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is
given you by Jesus Christ; That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in
all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was
confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming
of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye
may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by
whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:10 (KJV)
10Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye
all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that
ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
I think Paul may have been trying to show the Corinthians by *how* he did
his own introduction here: how to get along better, how to talk to each
other, how to love and respect one another, how much they have in common,
and how to convey Christian ideas to other Christians, and yes, perhaps even
offer correction, without lecturing or talking down to others.
So Adam, how about let's try to get a discussion of Christian unity going
here, in place of other discussions that may be further from the point. If
you get it going, I know I'll try to contribute, and I bet a lot of people
here will help keep such a discussion going.
Love in Jesus,
Tim
