"I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all
of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you
and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.

rsion=NIV&showfn=on&showxref=on> 1 Corinthians 1: 10
"Hey, yes, let's go out to dinner!" "Where do you want to go?"
Every social group goes through a process to reach agreement. In my family
of five, every member wants to express an opinion and every member wants the
member to enjoy the activity. Deciding upon where to eat dinner gets
confusing if each member has to have it a certain way. Ultimately a decision
occurs and that decision is always a compromise. Some must choose to enjoy
the choice though it is not the perfect preference.
Groups that meet to worship Christ have many strong opinions. Most Churches
contain the full spectrum of theological belief and background. It is
extremely difficult, some say impossible, to approach any subject involving
an action without significant discord among members from diverse
backgrounds. This disagreement can build into a division that steals
effectiveness from the Body of Christ.
The Corinthian Church allowed human pride, the need to be the one that
prevails in the decision, divide the Body into hostile factions. There is no
place for such vicious hostility in the Body of Christ. Stubbornly holding
to a position based upon "disputable matters", creating a group of followers
to the exclusion of all others is not the "agreement" advocated in this
scripture.
Like deciding to pick a place for the family to enjoy a dinner together, the
Body of Christ must avoid division through a process that considers the
sensibil! ities of each member. This process must be effective and timely.
No one member of the Body will have things exactly as desired so
flexibility, selflessness must be allowed to prevent division.
The Church in America today allows undercurrent, petty disagreements and
covert hostilities to damage effectiveness. The cause of Christ is lost to
infighting, disagreements, selfish power plays and political positioning.
Members of the Body of Christ that place His message above personal
recognition or position must reach reasonable agreement that does not allow
division.
