Mary has chosen what is better. - Luke 10:42 NIV
Martha was worried about something good - having Jesus over for dinner.
Her aim was to please Him. So far, so good. But she made a common mistake,
one a lot of us make - her work became more important than her Lord. What
begins as a serving experience becomes a self-serving one. She forgot that
the meal was to honour Jesus, not Martha. Sound familiar?
Listen to her: "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do
the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" And what did Jesus say to her?
"Martha, Martha...you are worried and upset about many things, but only one
thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better" (Lk 10:41-42 NIV). And
what had Mary chosen? Intimacy over activity. Religious activity that makes
us look good personally we need to especially be on guard against.
But this also happens to those who love the Lord, who are not involved
in religious work. It's amazing how many bright, successful people reach the
point of burnout because they've neglected their relationship with God. Oh
they never intended to; it's just that they've learned to make it on their
own and haven't been forced to rely on Him. Or they've bought into a
religious compartmentalisation of God, as if He's just another weekly
appointment, a client needing their attention on Sunday mornings.
Understand this: until you establish your relationship with God as the
foundation of your life, you'll struggle with finding your true purpose,
enjoying the fruit of your labour, and experiencing the peace of God that
surpasses all understanding (Php 4:7).
