Appendix B: Useful Software for Re-using Computers

[Donated computer being used in Ukraine]

  1. Free Software
  2. Other Software
  3. Other Resources

1. Free Software

Many vendors make older versions of their software available for free, in order to encourage users to upgrade to a newer version. Or, they may make one program available for free in order to attract attention to their other products. Or, they may put out a "demo" versions of their products which don't have all the functions of the full version. While these products might not be quite as well known as others, they are not "crippleware", but rather fully-functional versions, and can save hundreds or thousands of dollars compared with competing products.

Note: All of the programs listed in this section are free, at least under some circumstances. However, virtually all of them invite donations, or else can be supported through the purchase of manuals, T-shirts, or other items. If you can support "free" software developers, please consider doing so, so that these tools will continue to be available to those who need them, but can't afford to pay for them.
