1. Free Software Many vendors make older versions of their software available for free, in order to encourage users to upgrade to a newer version. Or, they may make one program available for free in order to attract attention to their other products. Or, they may put out a "demo" versions of their products which don't have all the functions of the full version. While these products might not be quite as well known as others, they are not "crippleware", but rather fully-functional versions, and can save hundreds or thousands of dollars compared with competing products. Note: All of the programs listed in this section are free, at least under some circumstances. However, virtually all of them invite donations, or else can be supported through the purchase of manuals, T-shirts, or other items. If you can support "free" software developers, please consider doing so, so that these tools will continue to be available to those who need them, but can't afford to pay for them.

DOS
	Arachne Labs	Arachne	Graphical web browser, complete with a suite of freeware utilities to allow DOS users to connect to the Internet.
	Browser.org	Lynx	Text-only web browser, useful for surfing the web in a hurry, without waiting for graphics, animations, and other bandwidth-consuming features on web sites, and for testing your own web sites for compatibility.
	Club DR-DOS	Caldera DOS 7.03	Fast, stable MS-DOS workalike with no licensing issues. When Caldera changed its name to Lineo in order to focus on Linux, they made Caldera DOS (which was originally created by Digital Research as DR-DOS, and was owned for a while by Novell, and thus called Novell DOS as well) available free and open source. Caldera DOS 7.03 is roughly equivalent to MS-DOS 6.22, but comes with Novell Netware client software for free. It's perfect for re-used computers too slow to run Windows or Linux.
	DataPerfect	DataPerfect	WordPerfect's database module, now available as freeware.
	Info-Zip	ZIP, UNZIP	.ZIP format archiving utilities.
	Cliff Leitch	CV-Schedule	Church Volunteer Scheduler is free for religious and other non-profit organisations.
	SimTel		SimTel is probably the oldest software repository on the net which is still actively maintained. New software is added all the time, but the old stuff rarely gets taken off, even if the developer's web presence goes down. (SimTel keeps its own archive of files.) This makes it extremely useful for finding older software (like DOS software) which isn't so popular anymore.

SafeShred	The free version of SafeShred is limited in several features, most notably the ability to overwrite unused space and the number of times that sectors get overwritten, but even with those limitations, it's better than leaving your data completely unprotected when you sell or donate your old computer.

	Grass Roots Software	SundayPlus 2.1 for Mac	The MacOS version of Grass Roots Software's SundayPlus presentation software is now available as a free download. It runs under MacOS 9.x or in Classic mode under OS X.
	Ken Hamel	Online Bible	Bible software for MacOS Classic (9.x and earlier. An OS X version is under development.) Many Bible versions and other resources are available for OLB, and many of them are available for free download. Copyrighted modern translations are available for a fee, or you can buy CD versions with multiple resource sets.
	James Hoover	Bean	Lightweight word processor (or glorified text editor, depending on your perspective.)
	Darik Horn	Darik's Boot And Nuke (DBAN)	Open source utility to wipe all information from a hard drive.
	iCab	iCab	Small, tight, fast web browser for the Macintosh. Ideal for use on older Macs being refurbished for re-use, but it's being updated so frequently that it's programmed with an expiry date, so you have to download the newest version every few months. Also comes with a built-in HTML checker so you can test the code on web pages you are creating.
	Info-Zip	MacZip	Assorted .ZIP format archiving utilities.
	Medieval Ventures	Excalibur	Spelling checker, which can be called from other applications using AppleScript.

This is useful for preparing a computer to be donated, so that personal or confidential data is kept secure. (Note: ShredIt 3.0 only works up to MacOS 7.x. For MacOS 8.0 and later, you should get the current commercial version.)

	Timnathserah	Online Bible	Free Bible program. Not all modules are free (any copyrighted versions require royalty payments), but the number of free resources available is amazing. The Windows 3.x version is no longer supported, but you can still download it.

2. Other Software Some software is so useful that, even at full price (which may not be all that much), it's a good choice for older computers. Some of these products are shareware, and some are commercial.

The code is very tight, and the application runs even on a 386. On faster computers, it flies.
