During the days when the most common way for people to use computer-mediated communications was by dialling into Bulletin Board Systems (BBSes), virtually every BBS maintained a "Files Section", with a collection of software and other files related to the interests served by that BBS. Thus, in order to find church related software, all you had to do was connect to your nearest Christian BBS, and you were bound to find at least a handful of shareware or freeware programs. Now that the Internet has become popular, and people put up web sites instead of BBSes, file sections are not so easy to find, unless you go directly to the web site of the software developer. Still, there are online collections of software. Some of these offer little more than the name of the program and a brief description, while others offer rating systems, reviews, searching by operating system, type of software, or other keywords, and so on.
| Site | Notes |
|---|---|
| C|net | Huge collection of software, with links to the developers' web sites (where such exist) and ratings. (Unfortunately, the ratings are not particularly reliable. It is possible for relatively small groups to "stuff the ballot box", making a particular application look much better or worse than it deserves.) The collection includes freeware, public domain software, demos, and shareware. |
| Christian FreeWare and Free Church Software | A project by TechMission to collect freeware and open source software. Available on CD-ROM, as an image download, or links to the web sites of each package. |
| Completely Free Software | An enthusiast's collection of pointers to assorted free programs, with reviews, and ranked by rating. |
| Free Christian Software | Links to Christian software which is available for free, including Bible memory tools, Bible study software, and screen saver for Windows, Macintosh, and PDAs. |
| Free Software Foundation | Links to GNU and Linux resources. |
| Freeware Files | A directory of links to freeware and open source software. |
| Freeware Pro | A directory of links to freeware and open source software for Windows. |
| Open Source Mac | A directory of links to open source software for Macintosh. |
| SimTel | SimTel is probably the oldest software repository on the net which is still actively maintained. New software is added all the time, but the old stuff rarely gets taken off, even if the developer's web presence goes down. (SimTel keeps its own archive of files.) This makes it extremely useful for finding older software (like DOS software) which isn't so popular anymore. |
| TheFreeSite.com | Links to all kinds of free goodies, including fonts and software. |
