A computer which is present in two or more networks, and has special software to permit mail sent from one network to be readdressed and properly delivered to another.

GIGO

Garbage In, Garbage Out. One of the great proverbs of the computer age. A computer, by definition, cannot give out accurate information if inaccurate information is fed into it. (Or, to be more precise, there is no such thing as a "Computer Error", there are only progamming errors and data entry errors.)

gopher

gopher ("go-fer") is a browsing tool for finding information on the Internet. Predating the more famous World Wide Web, gopher is a strictly text tool. That makes it quicker to navigate (because you don't need to wait for large graphics files to download) and easier to index (because all gopher menu choices are text, whereas many Web links are graphical images.) Nevertheless, because of its "point and click" interface, the Web has proven vastly more popular, and many gopher site administrators are beginning to neglect their gopher sites in favour of putting up Web sites. Still, gopher is not completely dead. It is always possible to access a gopher resource through the World Wide Web. For instance, to access the Wheaton College gopher site, you could click on a URL of: gopher://gopher.wheaton.edu/11/Church.

gopherspace

A term used to described all of the interlinked gopher sites on the Internet.

GUI

Graphical User Interface. In other words, the set of pointer, icons, and menus which allow users to interact with computers more easily. The Macintosh operating system and Microsoft Windows are examples of graphical user interfaces.

guru

Somebody who knows a great deal about computers, or some specific aspect thereof.
