Greg the Christian
My name is Greg, and I'm a Christian. What does that mean? I try to explain that in these pages, discussing why I believe and what I believe, and a number of the essays linked from my essays also relate to the Christian faith. I was baptised as a believer by immersion at First Baptist Church, Vancouver, BC, where I became a member. I have spent most of my life at First Baptist, and over the years, I taught Sunday School, and served on the World Mission Commission and the Computer Committee. When I graduated high school, I went to Calgary to attend the Baptist Leadership Training School (B.L.T.S.), and was assigned to a "Field Study" team at St. George's Chapel, the Protestant Chapel at Canadian Forces Base Calgary. (Up to that point, Field Study teams were normally assigned to local Baptist churches, but because of the demographic bulge, my class was larger than any that had come before, and new places for Field Study had to be sought out. Thus, my team was the first to serve at CFB Calgary.) Since then, CFB Calgary has been shut down and redeveloped. I don't know what happened to the chapel building or its contents. After I graduated from University, I went to Nova Scotia to attend Acadia Divinity College. During my first year there (1983-84), I was student pastor at Middleton United Baptist Church, serving under Rev. Don Robertson, who was pastor at that time. During my second year (1984-85), I did my field study at Mulgrave Park United Baptist Church, serving under Carl Price, who was pastor at the time. During the summer of 1985, I was called to the Okanagan to serve as a relief pastor for First Baptist Church, Kelowna (Steve Belmore was pastor then), K.L.O. Road Baptist Church, Kelowna (Allan Walker was pastor then), and Summerland Baptist Church (Jack Borchert was pastor at Summerland then. He is now, ironically enough, pastor at First Baptist, Kelowna.) Yes, that's three different churches. I worked six weeks in each. After graduating from Acadia, I had a couple of interim pastorates, first at Bethel-First Baptist Church in Prince Rupert, and then at Comox Community Baptist Church in Comox. In 1996, I went to Croatia for two years to work at the Life Center. For most of the time I was there (except when I was preaching somewhere else), I attended Rijeka Baptist Church. At that time, the pastor was Giorgio Grlj. When I returned to Canada, I got an apartment in Burnaby, about 4 blocks from Royal Oak Community Church, and it seemed a bit silly to be going past Royal Oak to take the SkyTrain all the way downtown to First Baptist, so I asked to have my membership transferred from First Baptist to Royal Oak in 1999. In 2000, I moved to Hong Kong for two years, and for most of the time I was there, I attended Island Baptist Church in Wan Chai. At that time, the pastor was Ralph Done. Since then, I have moved again, and am now living closer to First Baptist Church, so I moved my membership back again. First Baptist is part of the Canadian Baptists in Western Canada, which in turn is a part of Canadian Baptist Ministries, which in turn is part of the Baptist World Alliance. (For that matter, Royal Oak is also part of CBWC.)
