Please pray for my friend and fellow church member and her 3 children who
lost their home and ALL their belongings when their home burned late last
week. Although only the oldest daughter, Jennifer, was home and managed to
escape it has now been discovered that she started the fire herself. Debbie
(the mom) has been through a very hard life and has always stayed a strong
rock of a Christian. She has struggled with her daughter through some
physc. problems, drugs etc. and my heart breaks for her as her daughter is
in a hospital being tested and then will be prosecuted for the fire. Please
lift this family up to our Lord and praise Debbie for such a strong faith
through a life of turmoil.

WHO BUT JESUS? John 20:1-9
Few of us may ever know the complete despair of absolute defeat, the
mind numbing gloom of ultimate loss, or the death of a hope in which we have
put all our trust--only to find suddenly that we have not lost, that really
all is well.
The followers of Jesus were shocked and afraid during his trial and
death. The limits of their faith and understanding were tried. While some
may have been numb with sorrow or searching for the will to go on at all,
deep within a few may have been the fact-defying hope that even yet Jesus
would not ever fail them. They had each other, and they had their
experience of a man, Jesus the Son of God, whom they could never forget.
Imagine the nudge of hope in Peter and John as Mary ran to tell them
that the stone was rolled away and that Jesus was no longer in the tomb.
Consider the slowly growing excitement as they, the two who had been closest
to Jesus, ran to the empty tomb. Watch their eyes as first John and then
Peter look at the strips of linen and the burial cloth and enter the tomb.
These were the strips that had been wrapped around Jesus. This was the
burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. Now these materials are in
two neat stacks with the cloth folded by itself. Realize the understanding
in their eyes, and the joy beyond all joy spreading across their faces.
They believed in Jesus' triumph even though they could not fully grasp the
concept of resurrection. They saw the discarded cloths and believed!
Who but Jesus would have taken the care to fold His own grave clothes
so neatly? Who but Jesus would have had such humble confidence in the
slowly returning power of God within Him that he could gently fold his
loosened binding cloths? Who but Jesus would turn from the arrogant display
of triumphant power to tidy his own tomb? Who but Jesus would have left the
faith ensuring clues for his despondent but beloved friends? Praise the
Lord! Hosannah to the Son of David!

THE SUNDAY BEFORE THE CROSS
by CARL F. PHILLIPS < CarlPhil10@... >
As we approach Easter Sunday, our annual celebration of
the risen Christ, we pause to examine the events that led to
the crucifixion.
And when we look at the major events of that final week we
begin to see how Jesus focused on the cross that awaited him
in Jerusalem, how his deliberate actions led him nearer and
nearer to his destiny as the hours passed.
It began with the triumphal entry on Sunday, described as
follows by Luke (Chapter 19:29-44, NIV):
As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the
hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his
disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead
of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt
tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it
and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you
untying it?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it.'"
Bethphage was a village on the back side of the Mount of
Olives from Jerusalem, either on or very near the road from
Jericho. Bethany, the home of Lazarus and his sisters Mary
and Martha, was about two miles southeast of Jerusalem. The
Mount of Olives was a ridge about 2000 feet high at its
summit, and perhaps two miles long, just across the Kidron
Valley from Jerusalem. Jesus was in Bethany when he sent for
the colt, so the colt was probably in Bethphage, which would
have been the next village on the way into Jerusalem. And we
know, from other gospel accounts of this event, that the
colt was the foal of a donkey.
Jesus chose to be very deliberate, very obvious about
entering Jerusalem from the east on a donkey colt that no
one had ever ridden. This, the fulfillment of prophecy, was
his very public claim that he was the Messiah, the Anointed
One, the chosen Son of David. Everyone who had studied
scripture and the prophecy understood immediately what he
was doing. The temple priests understood completely.
Back to Luke's story:
Those who were sent ahead went and found it
just as he had told them. As they were untying the
colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying
the colt?"
They replied, "The Lord needs it."
They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on
the colt and put Jesus on it. As he went along,
people spread their cloaks on the road.
When he came near the place where the road goes
down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of
disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud
voices for all the miracles they had seen:
"Blessed is the king who comes in the name
of the Lord!
"Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"
The latest miracle they had witnessed was the raising of
Lazarus from the dead, just back down the road in Bethany.
And only a day or so earlier the blind man Bartimaeus had
been given his sight. The Twelve, having seen countless
miracles over the past three years, may have been a little
blas about these latest ones, but people in and around
Jerusalem were impressed.
The resurrection of Lazarus had brought people all the way
from Jerusalem, and now those people also crowded around
Jesus. Surely anyone who could raise the dead could lead the
revolt that would overthrow the hated Romans occupying the
Holy Land.
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus,
"Teacher, rebuke your disciples!"
"I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet,
the stones will cry out."
As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he
wept over it and said, "If you, even you, had only
known on this day what would bring you peace -- but
now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come
upon you when your enemies will build an embankment
against you and encircle you and hem you in on
every side. They will dash you to the ground, you
and the children within your walls. They will not
leave one stone on another because you did not
recognize the time of God's coming to you."
God was here, among them, and they did not know him. By
the end of the week they would reject him.
The Feast of the Tabernacle was winding down, and the
Feast of the Passover was just beginning. This was, in fact,
the day the Passover Lamb would be selected. Jerusalem was
filled with pilgrims from all over the known world, people
who had come here just to celebrate these festivals.
When they recognized that Jesus was proclaiming himself
the Messiah they gave him a joyous, enthusiastic reception.
They were sure their Savior had come, the one who would
overthrow the Romans.
But Jesus, looking across the Kidron Valley at the city on
the opposite hill, at Herod's splendid Temple gleaming in
the sun, wept. He could see very clearly where the military
revolution the people were clamoring for would lead.
The picture he could see of the destruction the Romans
would visit on this beautiful city just 40 years in the
future was pitiful. The conquerors would crucify rebels
until there was no more wood to be found to make crosses.
They would throw women and children off the southeast corner
of the temple, dashing them to death on the stones on the
floor of the Kidron Valley below.
Here he came, offering God's peace, offering God's love,
offering a kingdom of the spirit -- and these people could
not understand. They expected him to establish a political
kingdom. They were in no mood to hear messages of peace and
self-sacrifice and service. How the last would be first in
the kingdom -- that was not exactly an idea they were ready
to accept.
The cheers of the people around him gave no hint of the
jeers and insults they would hurl at him before the week was
out. "If you really are the Son of God let's see you come
down off that cross!"
It was enough to cause even God to weep.
