Given that Griffith Thomas is now a member of the Church Triumphant, I would imagine that seeking an answer from him would be contrary to my argument! :-) In all seriousness, I see a difference between the two acts in that Scripture is quite clear that we are to uphold one another in prayer -- that's debated by no one of whom I'm aware and we do it daily via the BCP. On the other hand, asking Mary (or anyone else who is deceased) to intercede for us does not have a clear Scriptural command nor do we find it in the BCP.
