Brethren,
Realizing that Bicknell was the commentary of choice among
Anglo-Catholics I procured a copy some time ago for my library. I
have not read all of it, although I have skimmed parts of it, and page
291 in my volume (published by Longmans, Green, and Co. in 1947) is
the beginning of the discussion of Article 29).
Quite frankly Bicknell lost considerable credibility with me on the
first page of his introduction where he discusses proposals to remove
the Articles as the focus of theological training and notes that,
"however desirable a reform may be in itself . . . ." His regard for
the Articles was evident from that.
My friend an co-ordaining bishop (he assisted Bishop West) the Rt.
Rev. Fitz Allison, D.Phil. (Oxon.), widely regarded as the finest
theological mind in ECUSA (and he's orthodox) has little regard for
Bicknell; I agree.
Soli Deo Gloria!
Drew
