I hear confessions in my office with the door close. I have a prayer desk in the office for the one confessing and I have it situtated so that while making the confession they have a crucifix in their line of sight and not me. I use the Penitential Office in the BCP because I like it, but I have and will use the form given in the Priest's Manual as well. When I use the Pentential Office, Pslam 51 serves as an act of contrition. The office is suspended at the end of the collect on page 62 that ends with "by thy merciful pardon may be absolved; through Christ our Lord. Amen." This is where I actually hear the confession. After the confession I use the absolution from the Holy Communion or one from the Priest's Manual. (Too bad the Penitential Offices doesn't have an absolution.) After the absolution I pick up with "O most mighty God..." and finish up the Office. The virtue of the PO is that it is in the BCP, it has all the elements necessary of a good form (except for an absolution), the prayers are pastorally encouraging, and it is beautiful. But it is flawed, in my opinion, by not having an absolution and I'm not entirely happy with it in this context. There's a lot to be said for the forms in the Priest's Manual. I really appreciate this conversation. gms+
