Typo to be forgiven: "St. Bernard insists that if the body of our Lord had
not been assumed into Heaven," SHOULD HAVE READ THE BODY OF OUR LADY (not
our Lord).

YEt, "since the sixth century the death of the Blessed Virgin is
commemorated in the liturgies on August 15. The Sacramentary of Pope
Gregory I (540-604) contains this passage: "To-days festival is venerable
to us, O Lord, because on this day the blessed Mother of God suffered
temporal death . . ."

"St. Bernard insists that if the body of our Lord had not been assumed into
Heaven, God would not have concealed its resting-place. But this is hardly
a cogent argument. God might have chosen to conceal our Lady's tomb for
the same reason that led Him to hide the grave of Moses, viz.: to prevent
idolatrous practices."

Thomas Hopko when asked what would it take to achieve reunion between Rome
and the Orthodox specifically says that the Pope must affirm that the BVM
died. That seems to suggest that there is enough concerning what Romans
really believe on this issue that the Orthodox need a statement affirming
that she in fact died.

This makes me wonder what Rome believes on the issue.
