Paul+ I agree with you that without question it was metaphor; Julian trying to explain the comprehensiveness of a God who is incomprehensible. What makes me a bit uneasy is how short a step it is from there to heterodoxy (would she have gone there had she not had confessors to keep her in check?). Not her problem, obviously, but one that -- as you said -- taken out of context can become a real bugger in redefining the faith. MLW+
