The problem with Rome (and there are many) is that they are so inconsistent about this issue. If the officiating priest likes you and you are friends then they will give you communion. If the priest is part if EWTN crowd, then hang it up...those guys are trying to rivive the pre Vatican II romantic notions of the Church. The answer to your question is don't ask don't tell.
