Diogenes is known as the Cynic philosopher who wandered around ancient Athens carrying a lantern and searching for an honest man. I believe his ghost must be wandering the floors and rabbit warrens of the New York Times shaking his head in Cynical disbelief.

In the interest of honesty and accurately ascribing credit, I quote the source of the following: a Journalism 101 series published on line by the Dayton Daily News.

Accuracy & Honesty in the News

May 2003 has been a tough month for The New York Times, one of the nation's leading daily newspapers.

Earlier this month, their staff reporter Jayson Blair was publicly pegged as a liar and a thief. Investigators have so far found evidence of fraud, plagiarism and errors in 36 of 73 articles written by him between October and April.

And just last week, on Friday, May 23, the Times reportedly suspended their national correspondent Rick Bragg, a Pulitzer Prize winner, for two weeks. In the Editors' Note printed with the Corrections that day, the newspaper stated that a feature story, published nearly a year ago about Florida oystermen, had been solely credited to Bragg. Instead, the Times should have also credited freelance journalist J. Wes Yoder, who did much of the field reporting for the story.

Although Yoder, interviewed by the Columbia Journalism Review, believes he and Bragg did nothing unethical and that the story was accurate, the Times is clearly nervous about anything that might erode its reputation as a trustworthy news source.

Charles resumes Friday Funny here:

Since the above bit was published, Bragg has resigned and gone on the air complaining that his misdeeds were common practice at The New York Times.{1}

To be fair, isn't nearly all the media, print and TV alike really doing op-ed and entertainment because it brings in more money? Many people think that the source of "All the News that's fit to print" leans to the left. Fox News claiming to be "Fair and Balanced" leans to the right. Both
have very glib and hard hitting writers/talking heads that entertain us and feed us what we want to hear. They, in their own way, are not unlike the gentle, kindly little lady who handed me a publication from the John Birch Society saying earnestly, "Now if you want to know the truth of the
matter . . . ." {2}

And so that is how "the world turns;" it spins. I'm nearly inclined to accept the verdict of Napoleon who (according to my usual unsubstantiated sources {3}) said, "History is lies; agreed upon." He must be right, for history is yesterdays news: all that is fit to print.

"FalSTAFF:. Do thou amend thy face, and I’ll amend my life: thou art our admiral, thou
bearest the lanthorn in the poop, but ’tis in the nose of thee: thou art the Knight of the Burning
Lamp."{4}

{1} HEARSAY FROM IMUS IN THE MORNING, MSNBC.
{2} A parishoner, whose name is withheld to protect the innocent.
{3}  MY HAZY MEMORY
{4} The First Part of King Henry the Fourth, Act 3 Scene 3 (An exchange between Sir John Falstaff and Bardolph. A most hilarious dialogue)

There, I have done my bit to document my sources. 8-)
