Brothers+ Using arguments for diversity, personal privacy and individual rights, two Supreme Court decisions this past week may well indicate what is just over the horizon for marriage laws in this country. Well-financed and politically savvy coalitions have had and are continuing to have their way in business, major churches and in government. It is no accident that the increased emphasis by some on separating sacred from secular is concomitant with the changes in law wrought by the courts in Canada and in these United States. A week ago a news article appeared about marriage laws in Canada that I did not post because it seemed a little remote from us. Today it appears we are rapidly catching up with Canada. See an accompanying post in regard to marriage laws in Canada. Some Church leaders have come to believe that their traditional teachings are hateful, discriminatory and wrong. Now that Christians holding traditional values are in a minority, it is easy to change the standards not only in the churches but also in a country, as recent high court decisions in Canada and the United States reveal. Take a look at pages 300 and following in our Book of Common Prayer. From the viewpoint of the militants in the gay/lesbian groups, the language is hateful. Now that the Supreme Court of the U.S. has taken the right to legislate against sodomy from the hands of the individual states, what chance have the states to maintain traditional marriage laws in an assault by those arguing for equal rights, personal privacy and diversity? The assault on the sacred by the secular will quickly continue. The gay/lesbian groups and their allies will take on marriage laws since the Supreme Court has proved so pliable. Those who teach such seemingly innocuous courses as homemaking and preparation for marriage may have to take a new look at their course material in the near future so that their lessons are politically correct. Insurance companies will have to re-examine their advertising and contracts, as will providers of health care. Employee benefits will have to be revised. This is not a glacial move we see in our society; it is a landslide. Charles+ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month! http://sbc.yahoo.com
