I came across these two statements today, reflecting diametrically opposed ways of liberating a people.

January 4, 1995 new york times:
PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat addressed the crowd, and told them, "Let no one think that they can scare us with their stronger weapons, for we have a mightier weapon - the weapon of faith, the weapon of martyrdom, the weapon of jihad."
---------------------------------------------------
Martin Luther King Jr.
"The nonviolent resister must often express his protest through
noncooperation or boycotts, but noncooperation and boycotts are not
ends themselves; they are merely means to awaken a sense of moral
shame in the opponent. The end is redemption and reconciliation.
The aftermath of nonviolence is the creation of the beloved community, while the aftermath of violence is tragic bitterness."
