Chiliasm was accepted by the Gnostics and Montanists and, as Dean Dunlap has
pointed out, some of our revered Fathers. It was eventually driven out of
the church because it began to stress all the lustly pleasures that would be
enjoyed by the saints in the "Millenium". Origen began the move to discredit
this position (and we know where he ended up--borrowing Mike's phrase) but
was finally and fully denounced by Augustine (are you happy, Mike?), at
which time the Church put this teaching aside.
