Chiliasm was accepted by the Gnostics and Montanists and, as Dean Dunlap
has pointed out, some of our revered Fathers. It was eventually driven
out of the church because it began to stress all the lustly pleasures
that would be enjoyed by the saints in the "Millenium". Origen began the
move to discredit this position (and we know where he ended
up--borrowing Mike's phrase) but was finally and fully denounced by
Augustine (are you happy, Mike?), at which time the Church put this
teaching aside.
