JVDB: Pray tell me, what are "diptychs"
==========================================

From the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church
Oxford Press, 1958:

DIPTYCHS. The lists of names of living and departed Christians for whom special prayer is made in the Greek and Latin Eucharistic Liturgies.

Though until recently read secretly in the West, in early times the diptychs were recited publicly, and the inclusion or exclusion of a name was held to be asign of communion or of excommunication.

The term is derived from the two-leaved folder(Greek:diptuxon) within which the lists were written. See also Book of life.
-----------------------

I wasn't familiar with the term either. 8-) We learn something new every day.
