By the way, I got a chuckle when you wrote, "Besides, one fact we can be
sure of about the Celtic episcopate is that it was inextricably bound up
with Celtic monasticism.  Indeed, in places like Wales, the bishop was
often subordinate to the abbot.  So far, I've heard no one advocate for
this!"
