> Dear Dean Scott: Have you gotten any numbers yet on attendance at our
APA parishes for Easter? Numbers were thin here in the Far West with
less than 20 (17 I think) adults at St Columba's.
>> I have seen two reviews off the Religious News
Service. One was by the Very Rev Thomas Hopko PhD who
is the Dean emeritus of St Vladimir's Seminary in
Scarsdale NY. Dean Hopko who is know to me 'fram way
back'is a priest in the Orthodox Church of America and
an excellent spokesman for the 'Byzantine' position..
I also saw a review from the Chicago Tribune by the
Dean of the Greek Cathedral there. I do not remember
his name.
                                             The gist
of this position (if I may put it this way) is that
God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself and
that Our Lord (this is pre Anselm by some centuries)
conquered death and hell by his rising to life again
on Easter. "...rising he restored our life, dying he
destroyed our death,,," Hence the Pauline text "...if
Christ be not raised from the dead then is our Faith
in vain...". The ransom theory (who is the ransom paid
to?) is a 12/13c. medieval construct (akin to our
concept of Purgatory or limbo)atempt to deal with a
theological dilemma/problem. (How not what)Certainly
there is a necessity (again if I may put it that way)
for the events of Holy Week but w/o the Resurrection
they are meaningless.

There is a book-Orthodox Dogmatic Theology : A
Summary by Michael POZMAZANSKY (St Herman Press 1983)
that covers this to some degree. The Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese of the Americas Web Site also has some
material on this as memory serves. Blessings in Mary's
Risen Son. Please pray for Thomas Bauer who is
seriously ill. Thank-you.GDVW+

                                       Dean Scott:
Happy Easter and thanks for posting this. Its very
> Western/Anselmian(surprise!) but worthy of serious consideration.
