Thank you, Fr. Erich, that is an excellent and useful prayer.

Subject: [FaithandLife] Election Prayer
Brothers,
Normally an election doesn't get a nod from me in church but as we can all
tell this year is different. As I live in the infamous "hanging chad" county
of Palm Beach, we are seeing a most incredibly shrill election time. And
this certainly is the case in other "battleground" areas. (It bothers me
that the media hypes the "battle" component) I have people in my parish of
both extremes and the emotions they have wrapped up in their partisan
politics allow them to see nothing else---INCLUDING GOD!
In an attempt to make some see that God guides them in everything about
their daily lives, including their election choices, I have cobbled together
the following prayer that I offer to all of you if you feel the need for
such a thing. This is put together from the Canadian Prayerbook and the
South African Prayerbook. Oddly enough, the bastion of democracy, America,
doesn't have a prayer for God's guidance in an election in the American
prayerbook. How passing strange.....
Anyway....
Here it is:
Let us pray for God's guidance in this present election.
Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom: Guide and direct, we humbly
beseech thee, the minds of all of us who are called at this time to elect
fit persons to serve this country in public office; that we may exercise our
choice as in thy sight, for the welfare of all our people; through our Lord
and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
