A POSSE OF TRUCK DRIVERS FOR HOMELAND DEFENSE
Brothers:
Since the capture of the snipers, I have intended to write a tribute to the
great "little people patriots" in our country. A truck driver, from Ludlow
Ky., by being observant and courageous accomplished what law enforcement
both national and local had failed to do. He found the snipers, and by
parking his truck across the exit from a rest area, prevented their possible
escape while he called the police to arrest them.
That fact should give our leaders pause when thinking of making yet another
giant bureaucracy responsible for Homeland Security. One educator recently
said that the title has a "Mussolini sound to it." If we're going to
by-pass people who actually have law enforcement experience to lead the
agency, why not pick a truck driver for the job? I sincerely believe their
native independence would make them less likely to use Homeland Security as
an excuse to grab power, and the skills they have accumulated would make
them better prospects for the job than the types that have inhabited the INS
and other bureaus.
A truck driver would most likely take these steps to assure homeland
security:
1. Tighten up the borders. Yes sir, I think a flotilla of 18 wheelers and
some good old boys might discourage illegal entry to the country. There may
not be a need to re-organize the agency that guards our borders so much as
to upgrade their hiring practices.
2. If the coast guard needs a little strengthening, call on the truckers
to bring their bass boats and shotguns for back-up. They would deter the
drug smugglers as well as the illegal immigrants.
3. If the INS is having trouble getting the paper work done, and difficulty
knowing who is coming into our country and why. Put truckers on the job.
Their struggles with government regulators, paper work, and shipping
companies have prepared them to quickly understand who speaks truth and to
handle paper and people exeditiously. They have schedules to make and a job
to do. They have provided
the materials on time to build, feed, and sustain this country overcoming
all obstacles in their way. Their work ethic would keep them from passing
along the paper work without really knowing what a visitor to this country
is here for and where he is going.
Well, you get the idea. Somehow I have a hard time getting exited about
having Tom Ridge, or any other bureaucrat tackle the job of melding
bureaucracies that have been less than successful into a "new" organization.
I really think they need to upgrade their hiring practices and be a little
imaginative as to real world solutions. Some of these guys have been too
long behind desks.
