As regards Tract XC:
Archbishop Tait never regretted the part he took in condemning the it. In 1880, he said "Were it all to happen again I think I should, in the same position, do exactly as I did then." (Life of Archbishop Tait. Vol. 1, pp.81,82). Newmans friend, the Rev. Isaac Williams, said, "Many have naturally supposed that it was the condemnation of the Tract No XC, by the Heads of Houses, which gave his [Newman's] sensitive mind the decided turn to the Church of Rome." An honest man, holding the opinons that Newman expressed to Williams, would at once have seceded to Rome, and not have waited till 1845.
It might prove interesting to some to read Newman's pamphlet, Letter to the Bishop of Oxford on Occasion of Tract XC, dated March 29th, 1841. Soon after the publication of this pamphlet, the Rev. W.G. Ward wrote to old Dr. Pusey, "I have heard Newman say that it is, to say the least, doubtful whether there can be said to be a valid Sacrament administered unless the priest adds mentall what our Eucharistic Service omits."
Just a comment for what it might be worth.
