you could also check for a command-period
inside the loop in your "beeper" function,
rather than relying on the "handlebreak" routine.

a while back i posted a routine that used a
"call getkeys" to check for command-period.

the main use for that routine is this exact situation --
to drop out of a loop if the user presses command-period.

(a "break on / off" pair _can_ be used to do the same thing,
but it has the bad disadvantage of swallowing other events.
and multiple "handleevents" always makes me way too nervous.)

so put that routine inside the loop in your "dobeep" function
-- setting "x" to 1 if you detect a command-period --
and your code will work fine...
