Actually I've found it to be handy from time to time as long as I program
it to speak when I want.  And it sure is cool for messages between people
playing a networked game :-)

Although I hope to find the smartass at Apple who defaulted all alerts to
speak in a dark alley some day.  Doesn't get much more annoying than that.
