PR said that it was faster than serial, which is true. I don't think it was
really planned as a replacement for SCSI though, that's what FireWire is
for.

USB........12 Mb per second
SCSI.......80 Mb per second
FIREWIRE...400 Mb per second

If I remember correctly, these are their respective speeds.
