It never gets damaged, although the app does crash once in a while, but
seemingly only on older power macs. Another of lifes mysteries.

The reason its open is that there are 300+ records in a resource that need
access into at various times. I thought it would be faster to leave it open
and use the USERESFILE to pop between my normal and the external. Wrong
thinking?

You may have hit on something. I can update any of the items in the
resource (TEXT) so maybe its in the delete section...hummm...if it was
easier to use variable length records in a data fork, I'd do it. But its
not, so I use the resources since the data can change size at any time the
user wants it to.
