I have been hearing rumour of the coming demise of volume
reference numbers% in their working directory reference
number% karma ever since HFS appeared in 
somewhere around 1986.  The rumour
was loudest back in the '80s.

Surprisingly they survived into System 7 (around 1990).

What is their status in Carbon (native OSX 2001)?
