A retro (all Macs) solution is to call FN PBGETVOL at application 
startup. (= FN GETVOL of FBII).

If your app is in locomotion along with the file, Heather 
suggests the Process Manager.  Lots of chat on all 
approaches in the digests over even just the last year.
