You would be right if you were dealing with a monochromatic (one frequency)
signal. However, a typical microphone signal is composed of numerous
frequencies. As such, IMHO, zero crossings tell you virtually nothing about
the frequencies of the signal. If I'm wrong, please educate me.

Also, you appear to be mixing terminology. The sample rate is different
than zero crossings.
