You don't need to have OS X to compile and run a Carbon app.

However, you will need CarbonLib installed in Mac OS 8.6 to 9 (BTW, you 
apparently have the latest and greatest on your 7300 -- 1.6).  Carbon 
apps will run natively on OS 9 AND OS X -- one of the beauties of 
Carbon.  You should be able to compile and run for Carbon on your 7300 
running 8.6 now.

I tested the Robert Purves code I sent you in different compilation 
configurations on my machine and found this out:

The _keyUpEvt only seems to work in Carbon complies.  It will not print 
"key up" in cpu68k, cpuFat, or cpuPPC compile options -- only Carbon.

I suggest you try compiling for Carbon on the PM 7300 running OS 8.6 to 
see what happens.  Try it with the following options set:

Runtime : Rntm Appearance.Incl
CPU : Carbon

Let us know what happens,
