I know a lot of you here use Appleworks, so I am posting this snippet,
which I saw on Macintouch today.

Ha! That first one sounds like my quality non-functioning TIFF export
in Compositor v2.5a16 for OSX . Great minds non-functioning alike.  : )

The Apple Knowledge Base documents a nasty AppleWorks bug with
DOS-format floppies, which can wipe out your file:

AppleWorks does not save a file when:

*	You choose to export the file using one of the included translators,
such as "Save As Word 98 document".
*	You choose to save the file onto a DOS-formatted floppy disk.
Warning: If you export the file using a filename that already exists on
the disk, the existing file may be deleted, and the new file will not
be saved.
Products affected

*	AppleWorks 6.0 and later
*	Mac OS 8.0 through 8.6
*	Mac OS 9.0 through 9.2
*	Any DOS-formatted 1.4 MB floppy disk
Note: This symptom does not occur with DOS-formatted Zip or SuperDisk
disks
