OK, perhaps I was not careful enough.   I could not dismiss the windows, so
I just opened each of them and thought...good enough.

With or without the added 127.   (It also does not matter if I use 1 or 0

Run program

Select About Compositor...win appears sorta in the middle of the screen
Select Preferences...win appears in upper left.
Select About Compositor...a shadow win appears upper left.


Start again,

Select About Compositor...win appears sorta in the middle of the screen
Select it again, a shadow win appears upper left.

start again,

Select preferences...works right
Select preferences again...works right.
