You may be referring to overlay windows which are invisible.

I think there was something within the past 2 months or so about a 
window that ended up invisible but its contents were visible: ie any 
odd-shaped window contents (text, in my case) appeared without the 
encumbrance of the window containing it/them.

I don't remember the thread, and can't draw a bead on the contents. Old 
age, you know... Are any of you kids able to help?
