Well, my user solved the problem herself.  She had been 
double-clicking on the MovieTools icon, which started the app 
loading, and which then caused Classic to load.  So MovieTools 
couldn't find its prefs file.  When she manually started Classic 
first, and then launched MovieTools, all was well.

Thanks for the help here.  I was about to query her on just this 
subject based on Brian's suggestions when she beat me to the punch.
