Sorry folks this might be a little non FB related, though in the long  
run I can see I would need write a program in FB to do this.

Does anyone know if it is possible to control the presentation of  
sounds from more than 2 speakers?

We have been doing some experiments on sound localisation and we need  
to present stimuli at more than two locations (ie more than just L &  
R). Obviously this will need some special hardware. I know the new  
macs have optical audio outputs but there seems to be precious little  
information of what you can use these for or what they interface to.  
I'm not sure even if they support more than two channels.

Garage band and the like support multiple channels but I'm not sure  
if you can easily output those multiple channels without mixing it  
down to two.

Any input greatly appreciated.
