My main box is also a 20" 2.1GHz iMac G5, and the installation of  
10.4.7 a while back diddled all my USB-to-serial adaptors (Keyspans).  
The first fix was to restore the beast to 10.4.6 via Carbon Copy  
Cloner (which has proved to be a lifesaver!), and the second was to  
get a wad of new drivers for the Keyspans.

All this is by way of saying that something deep in the heart of  
10.4.7 had an odd (to say the least) side effect. Might this be  
something to check?
