Subject: Re: [PastorsForum] What Does the Bible Say I agree with those who have said that the Bible prohibits drunkenness and not drinking. Personally, I do not drink. I also have alcoholics in my family and so does my wife. It is just not prudent for me to drink. But I don't think the Bible prohibits drinking in moderation. That said, why do you suppose that the Holy Spirit did not inspire the biblical writers to insert an outright prohibition on alcohol? In fact, Psalm 104 implies that God gave wine for our enjoyment: You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man's heart. (Psa 104:14-15 ESV) He causeth the grasse to grow for the cattell, and herbe for the seruice of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth: And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oile to make his face to shine: and bread which strengtheneth mans heart. (Psa 104:14-15, KJV 1611) Proverbs 31:6-7 even suggests that a legitimate use of alcohol is it's potential to cause one to forget his troubles and is useful as a painkiller. Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress; let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. (Pro 31:6-7, ESV) Giue strong drinke vnto him that is ready to perish, and wine vnto those that be of heauie hearts. Let him drinke, and forget his pouertie, and remember his misery no more. (Pro 31:6-7, KJV 1611) Everything that God created, he created for a reason. It is our responsibility to take dominion over creation and use what he has made responsibly. (And no, this does not mean that I ever condone the use of narcotics. That is not the same as moderate drinking.) What does the teetotaling crowd say to the verses sited above? -- Grace and peace, Kevin Sigafoos --------------------- I see those verses you sighted and I'll raise you to Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. and Proverbs 23:31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
