Jerry,

When Jesus taught on the reason why the disciples
could not cast the demon out, Jesus spoke of 1. prayer
and 2. fasting.

In the Old Testament we have what is called 'The
prophet's fast' It was a 40 day fast. Besides the
medical benefits that come with fasting, the Spiritual
benefits were increased faith and readiness for
ministry. Jesus started His ministry with a FAST and
imediately after the fast he was confronted by the
Devil. In Matthew 9:14, the Pharisees noted that they
and Jesus fasted often.
Remember that demons and devils[fallen angels] have
great power [compared to us] and it takes great faith
to deal with them. When one fasts, he fills that time
with prayer to God so that he can be built up in his
faith.

3 N.T. Scriptures:

Romans 8:38,39; Ephesians 3:10; and Colossians 2:15

When I looked up the terms principalities, powers,
they all had the conatation of fallen angels.
Especially when you read Colossians 2:15, Jesus
triumphed over them and made them a 'spectacle' out of
it all. Just as we have an army with privates,
corporals, sargents, luitenants, etc. I see a chain of
command in the forces of evil.
In Matthew 12:43-45 talks about someone who had a
devil cast out and because he did not fill the
emptiness with God and His word, that demon came back
and took 7 worse then himself into that man. So faith
has a lot to do with it. Just as a bodybuilder has to
practice and train to get his muscles in the shape he
wants, we as Christians need to train and practice to
increase our faith. Fasting is an avenue of helps to
get into that shape.
