I'm sorry that this discussion has degenerated into a debate about
which instruments are or are not permitted in worship. That was not
the point of the article. The point was the shallowness of the lyrics
of many of the modern praise music and how we have lost the rich
theology and musically complexity of the grand old hymns.

Hymns were used by the church to teach theology. Modern praise music
is used to manufacture shallow emotions. Hymns have grand and
meaningful themes that are rich with biblical references. Praise
music is "Jesus is my boyfriend" fluff that could just as easily be
sung by a Buddhist, a Muslim or an atheist.

The church has been deprived of the biblical meat of the great hymns
and is malnourished by a steady diet of "junk food" music.

I think that the real reason for the predominance of
emotionally-driven dribble is that we have lost confidence in the
power of the Word of God to draw people unto Himself. We need loud,
pounding beats to get people excited about worship when they should be
drawn by a hunger for the Word of God.

The point is not the beats or the instruments used. It's the dumbing
down of the church and the watering down of the theology of worship.
